WOMEN

Ashburton’s second game of the season started with aggressive plays up forward that saw the Glen Eira keeper grab the ball within 9 seconds of kick off. {mospagebreak}

  At 2’ Natalia did great midfield work to bring the ball forward. At 5’ Rory persistently tackled in the midfield with multiple touches. Ashburton’s first attempt on goal came at 6’from the big boot of Antonia when her 30m kick went wide of the right post. At 7’ Ashburton was caught off side and at 8’ a powerful through ball penetrated the opposition’s defence but, despite sprinting hard, Gioia just missed it as it ran over the base line. At 9’ the ball entered the Ashburton’s defence but was easily cleared by the vigorous efforts of Daisy. At 10’ the Glen Eira keeper grabbed the ball but her goal kick was short and was collected by Gioia who, after some heavy tackling, won her team’s first corner attack. Antonia took the kick that was cleared by the defence, but it was again collected by the enterprising Antonia who took a 25m shot went over the top bar. Katherine brought the ball up forward at 12’ and a push into the back of Gioia at 13’ won a free kick. Antonia took the kick and her shot from 30m sailed over the top bar. It was all Ashburton with the opposition’s keeper having to grab the ball again at 14’. Another goal kick was collected by Gioia at 14’ and she passed back to Katherine who again booted the ball forward but it was cleared by the defence. Good team play. At 15’ the ball came down to the defence for the second time and was easily cleared by the well positioned Rebecca. At 16’ Antonia took another shot from 30 m that sailed over the bar. Glen Eira stabilised and the midfield and defence had to do some work. At 17’ Rebecca did a great stop and kicked the ball forward with Amelia on the receiving end. The ball again came back and Daisy collected it to pass off to Rory. At 18’ Adelaide collected the ball and did a quick turn and booted the ball forward. Gioia again took chase but could not catch it before it went over the baseline. An effective Ashburton throw, pass back and boot forward combination saw the ball brought forward. At 19’ saw Gioia boot the ball forward but it was again cleared by the defence. At 21’ Antonia did a good run up the wing to collect the ball, she passed it to Adelaide who passed it back to the still running Antonia who took a shot at goal that was punched away by the keeper. A perfectly positioned Amelia tapped the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the game, and for the season. Great stuff. Another goal came 2 minutes later when Antonia’s shot was punched away by the keeper, and as it fell in front of the goal, Lucy burst through and banged it hard high into the back of the net. Score 2-0. Glen Eira stepped up their play and Rebecca intercepted the ball at 24’, dribbled forward and then did a clearing kick. At 25’ Rory, Adelaide and Katherine worked well in a defensive combination that saw the ball brought forward. At 27’ Rebecca headed the ball out and Glen Eira’s first shot at goal was very wide of the right post. Rebecca’s goal kick was collected by Adelaide, she ran up the wing and passed the ball to Lucy who then took a shot 30m out that sailed over the baseline. At 29’ Senuri made an impressive run up the left wing from the baseline to the centre line to clear the ball. At 30’ Antonia again pushed through the defence and her shot went to the keeper. At 31’ Antonia did a big cross that the keeper fumbled but there was no-one to push it in and the keeper managed to grab it again. At 32’ Jaimee did two effective spoils and Rory ran the ball up forward. Another goal resulted when Jessie did a perfect cross that was booted in for another goal by Lucy, score 3-0. Ashburton had to withstand pressure from the opposition with Daisy doing a sliding tackle at 34’. Lucy took another shot at 36’ that just missed.
Half time score 3 -0.

The second half saw a more determined opposition and the ball was mainly in the defensive half. Glen Eira took a shot at 38’ but due to the defensive work from Ourdia it went over the baseline. At 39’ a defensive kick out saw the ball just hit the outside of the right post – a near own goal! The opposition took another shot at 39’ that again went over the baseline. The Ashburton keeper had her first touch of the ball when she grabbed it at 40’. Again at 42’ a Glen Eira shot at goal was punched by the keeper to concede a corner defence. Defensive kick outs saw another three corner defences mounted before the ball was eventually cleared. It came back again rapidly at 44’ and keeper Rebecca did a great save when she flung her body sideways to block the ball, and then quickly stood to use her body to block another follow up kick. Great effort! Glen Eira again shot wide at 45’. Finally at 46’ Rebecca and Daisy combined to clear the ball up forward. Lucy ran up the right wing at 47’ and did a cross but unfortunately there was no-one there and the keeper grabbed it. At 50’ Rebecca collected the ball, dribbled to the centre line and did a good through ball that Antonia ran onto, she then passed it to Jessie whose shot on goal was wide. At 52’ Senuri and Ourdia did good passing shots to bring the ball forward and Natalia did a big run but her kick at goal was punched away by the keeper. Ashburton had three consecutive corner attacks that they could not capitalise on. Glen Eira finally had another long shot on goal at 55’ that went over the baseline. At 62’Natalia did a courageous sliding tackle to clear the ball and Rory worked hard in the middle. The opposition again took a shot at 63’ that the Ashburton keeper grabbed. Glen Eira had a corner kick at 64’ but the keeper caught it. Ashburton finally got the ball up forward and had a corner attack at 68’ but it was too short to be effective and was easily cleared. At 70’ Gioia did a big run up the field but a defender kicked the ball out. The whistle sounded with a final score of 3-0.

It was a magnificent first win for the season. The girls played hard in the first half with positive results. The second half was a battle of the defences and fought in the middle of the pitch with few scoring opportunities for Ashburton. It is a promising start and it is hoped that as the girls gel as a team it should form the basis for more future wins. Well done Girls!!
